  1. 1966 trainnning -- First Dojo-- cleaned Dojo by getting buckets of water for trainning time. This was a time where great interaction and training took place--lots of laugher and good times. Many people were involved in the start of the Dojo such as building the foundation --old students would help build blocks. Students helped in a tremendous way and made sure that the start of the 1st Dojo would be a success.

Monday was the start of cleaning the Dojo and Sunday was an off day. Once student returned on Monday Dojo was a mess since someone kept vandalizing the outside of the Dojo. This individual an older man would come to the Dojo on Sundays while everyone was gone. He evenutally passed away in his late 30's.
1966- My father made rice mats for the dojo.
This is the inside of the first dojo I taught at.
There were no lights and no running water.
We used a water pump and a gas lamp.

Ernest Brown and I trained together under Grandmaster Bong Soo Han in 1965

Building the Old Dojo

Building the Old Dojo

Master Chang's old dojo was a product of hard work, patience and determination.
They had to build it by buying bags of cement to make concrete blocks. One bag made 60 blocks. The old dojo was very strong and lasted 40-50 years without any damage.
When the Korean war finished, it was a hungry time. Only 3 times that year, they had meat: his birthday, new years and thanksgiving. They got water from a well and carried it to their home.
1960s time - An American student bought him a hamburger for lunch and it kept him up that night with excitement.
At that time, the whole Korean country was poor.
Many students helped build blocks for the old dojo. They had good harmony with Master Chang. It took almost 3 years to build the old dojo. They built the walls. They had to wait to build the roof. Later they put in the windows. Then a rich man, his sponsor, helped him buy flooring.
Young people don't understand the patience and hard work it took to build things in that time. The older generation understands the hard times.

Humility is an easy, universal lesson and we all know of its goodness. However, to carry out the action of humility is a difficult process that requires the lowering of one's self and needs, which is also a difficult task. The difficulty arises because of the pride that manifests in our hearts. At times, pride is a reaffirming emotion in our strengths, but in abundance, it is also our greatest weakness.
The most beautiful people are able to leave pride behind and lower their selves for the service of others. For them, their pride is controlled and kept deep within so that their actions exhibit not arrogance, but self-confidence. This confidence, then, positively attracts the attention of others allowing the individual to be surrounded by good people.
The conclusion is that only those able to surrender themselves are able to accomplish great achievements. A caterpillar is thin and round and moves by scrunching and straightening itself; it must make itself smaller to make any hint of forward progression. In this way, people must also first make themselves smaller before making themselves bigger.
To a person destined for greatness, bending one's self is an easy task in the larger picture of walking a great path.
