Just as the basic moves form the foundation of hapkido, the foundation between the instructor and student is the basic relationship. Without fully learning and understanding the teachings of the instructor, one cannot successfully repeat the teachings without adding their individual input. This then creates a continuously growing gap between the relationship of the original instructor and student, and thus, takes away from the traditions of hapkido. Without keeping to the roots of hapkido, one can neither grow within himself or herself, nor help in the growth of others.
The relationship of the instructor and student has its declared way, just as there exists the "hapkido way" of the harmonious body and spirit:
- humility without respect creates conflict of interest
- discipline without respect creates fear
- courage without respect creates confusion
- strength without respect creates lack of direction.
Humility, discipline, courage and strength. These are the traits of a great relationship but above all, the lesson of sincerity, especially sincere respect, should not be forgotten.
