The culture of martial arts in Korea, at present, is comprised of a variety of styles that ironically, teach very similar techniques. With this blend of martial arts, it is natural that the tradition of knowing one's master and their masters is lost since emphasis on origin is no longer a priority.
The process of becoming familiar with one's instructor and their history, along with the history of the martial art, itself, gives opportunity to become familiar and clear with an individual's self and training, as well. With this stable background, an artist is then able to adapt the techniques as their own and in the future, continue the longetivity of the martial art through new pupils. It is also with this process that an athlete is differentiated as a martial artist.
It is the current trend in athletics to ignore traditional foundations of any sport, indicative of a lack of traditional trainers. In martial arts and Hapkido, this unfortunate fate was furthered by their treatment as business prospects by instructors, whose focus on forcing the art to become unique completely changed its principles.
Then, the lesson to learn from these depressing trends is: a martial artist must release worldly ambitions and accept humbleness to uphold the sincerity of this way of life.
